I aim to be cost effective with all my repair or installation projects. I'm most cost effective when it comes to jobs covering multiple trades. Most of my clients keep a list of basic desired improvements and nuisances and run them by me first. If I think they can get any of the work done cheaper/faster with someone else, I'll state that.
